Where the church shows up: migrant camps and rehab centers

Some of the most important ministry in Ensenada happens where there is no church building at all. Each harvest season, families move to the agricultural valleys around the city to work the fields, living in camps far from home, far from school, and often far from any congregation. Around the city, men and women rebuilding their lives at drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers are listening for hope. Ensenada Ministries carries the church to both places, because the love of Jesus travels best when it goes to where people already are.

Who lives in the migrant camps?

Farming runs deep in Baja California. Through the harvest months, families follow the work from valley to valley, moving into camps that sit close to the fields their parents and older siblings work from sunrise to sundown. The houses are simple and the days are long. Children grow up beside working parents, far from the schools and neighborhoods most of us take for granted, and a family may be in one camp for only a single season before the work calls them somewhere else. That is why the camps are easy to overlook and so easy to forget, and it is exactly why the ministry keeps coming back.

What does ministry at the camps look like?

The visits are shared with local pastors who know the camps by name, so the work continues all season long, not just in the weeks a visiting team happens to be there. Teams help with meals, lead children's programs under open skies, and build friendships that outlast a single visit. For a child who spends every day beside working parents, an afternoon of games, songs, and Bible stories is a gift they remember for years. And because a camp family may be here only for the season, the ministry makes every visit count, trusting that kindness leaves a mark that travels with the family to the next valley.

Who are the people at the rehab centers?

Addiction takes a heavy toll in Ensenada, and many of the doors God has opened for the ministry are at drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers around the city. The men and women in these homes are rebuilding their lives one day at a time, often with little encouragement and little hope. Some have been welcomed by their families again; some have lost contact with everyone they love. They are often the people the rest of the city walks past, but they are never people God has stopped loving. The ministry walks alongside them, visiting recovery homes to share the gospel, to listen to their stories, and to remind them that transformation is real and possible in Christ.

What difference does a mission team make?

For many of the men and women in recovery, the first real hope they have heard in years comes from a team that simply showed up and stayed, week after week. Mission teams bring testimonies, music, and presence. They sit and talk, they pray, and they help each person find a church family that will keep walking with them after the program ends. Recovery is a long road, and the ministry intends to be on it with them, one visit, one conversation, and one prayer at a time. The same is true at the camps: the consistent presence of the church, carried by teams and local pastors together, is what turns a single visit into a relationship that outlasts a season.

How can I be part of this ministry?

You do not have to be a pastor or a counselor to stand beside someone in recovery, and you do not need to speak Spanish to show a child in a camp that they are loved. Teams who come to Ensenada help with meals, lead children's programs, pray with the men and women at rehab homes, and carry the church to the camps, all under the guidance of local pastors. If you cannot come, your giving keeps the visits happening and the vans rolling all season, and if you want a full description of every program, the ministries page walks through the work, from Feeding the Kids to the church home at the women's prison to the visits at the camps and rehab centers. To take your first step, the get involved page lays out the doors of going, giving, and praying side by side. It is a small yes that travels a long way.

This work did not begin this season. It is the fruit of 26 years of ministry in Ensenada, hundreds of partnered teams, and churches on both sides of the border that keep showing up. Come be part of what happens next.
