Serving alongside the local church in Ensenada

Ensenada Ministries has one rule for everything we do in Mexico: we work alongside local churches, not around them. For 26 years, since our first gathering of 3,400 campers in 2000, that rule has shaped how we plan work projects, run children's programs, distribute food and medical supplies, and help build a church home at the women's prison. Local pastors and congregations know Ensenada's needs firsthand, and they carry the work between visits, so a partnership is not a one-time project. It is a lasting relationship.

Partners, not saviors

Visiting teams sometimes arrive expecting to do ministry for people who have less. The ministry gently turns that around. The church in Ensenada is already at work, and our job is to serve beside it. That posture sounds simple, but it changes everything about a trip: the local pastor helps choose the project, the neighborhood children come because their own church invited them, and the worship gathering on the last night is led together, not for anyone. It is why the relationships here outlast any single workday, and it is why churches that partner once tend to come back for years. You can see every program that grows out of this approach on the ministries page, from Feeding the Kids to Vacation Bible School to the prison church.

What partnership looks like on the ground

Partnership in Ensenada takes four familiar shapes. The first is work done together: teams paint, repair, and build at local churches and church-run properties, so a congregation that will serve its neighborhood for decades is stronger because we came. The second is children's ministry run with the church: feeding programs and Vacation Bible School weeks that turn parks and courtyards into places of laughter, and that the local church keeps going every week after the team flies home. The third is practical care distributed through the churches' own networks: groceries, warm meals, and medical supplies that reach the families pastors already know by name. The fourth is worship that continues: a local congregation gathered on a Sunday, with visitors welcome, long after the border crossing is a memory.

When a church in the United States partners with a church in Ensenada, both are changed, and the encouragement passes both directions long after a team goes home.

Two doors the church helped open

Nothing shows what partnership can build like the church home at the women's prison. Working together with local believers, the ministry helped build a place of worship inside the prison, and the project is complete: women there now have a sanctuary of their own, where approved visiting teams join ongoing visits to sing, pray, and remind every woman that she is not forgotten. In the harvest season, the same partnership carries the church to the farmworker camps in the agricultural valleys, where families are far from home and often far from any church. Local pastors who know the camps by name lead the way, and teams help with meals, children's programs under open skies, and friendships that outlast a single visit.

How your church can step in

However your congregation is wired, there is a way in. Bring a team for a week of work projects and children's ministry, and the mission trips page walks you through dates, group sizes, and the weekly rhythm. Give toward feeding, medical supplies, or the prison church, and your gift becomes a real box or a real visit through the donate page. Or start smaller: pray by name for the pastors and families we serve, and let your church learn the same way ours did, one relationship at a time. Three simple doors, go, give, or pray, are laid out on the get involved page.

If your church is ready to talk dates, write to us through the contact page. We will help you shape the week around your group and the local church you will serve alongside, and the door in Ensenada only grows warmer with each team that walks through it.
